Sharon E. Sweeney

Sharon opened her private psychotherapy practice in York, Maine, in 2004 and moved her practice to Newburyport, Massachusetts in 2011. She has extensive training in Clinical Hypnosis, which can help with a wide variety of medical and mental health issues. She also utilizes Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), which is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress. Sharon also utilizes EMDR to help business executives with Professional Performance Enhancement.

Sharon's training at the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston, MA, (now called the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine) uniquely complements her comprehensive expertise as a clinician, allowing her to provide exceptional resources that enrich the lives of her clients. Sharon teaches clients to reduce stress, implement relaxation techniques into their daily lives, and retrain their minds for mental excellence.

Before opening her own practice, Sharon was a Substance Abuse Counselor at York Hospital's Cottage Program. She has extensive experience conducting individual, group, and family therapy for clients struggling with dual diagnoses in a variety of settings, including intensive outpatient programs, partial hospital programs, and community mental health centers. In addition, Sharon has vast experience working in hospitals on inpatient psychiatric units with children, adolescents, adults, and the geriatric population, as well as their families.

Sharon worked as a Rape Crisis Counselor for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center after returning from living in Bermuda, where she taught Business to at-risk youth and volunteered as a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Bermuda. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Dolphin Quest Bermuda.

Prior to relocating to Bermuda, Sharon spent five years working in public and investor relations. Sharon utilizes her diverse skill sets to assist clients in reaching their goals and creating and implementing road maps to success.

Sharon graduated summa cum laude from the Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work in Boston, Massachusetts, with a Masters in Social Work. Simmons College also awarded her the Iris MacRae Award for outstanding creative achievement in both academics and clinical work. Previously, she graduated cum laude from Northeastern University, also in Boston, MA, with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies.
